Humanising the Workplace’ – Transforming Work into Opportunity for Human Development

At work most of us spend most of our lives, the best years of life and the best hours of most of our days. If we use work only as a way to make a living – we miss on work’s major potential for human development.

What we have to do at work might not be a free choice for most of us, as work in all its forms is primarily a human service, but How we do it is potentially a free choice: how much of our potential for personal, social, spiritual and creative development comes to expression through work – that is not defined by job descriptions. It is an individual choice and it requires initiative and skills

A workplace is only fully human when the deep developmental potential of the human beings working in it is mobilised, activated and comes to expression. When our ‘Inner Career’ develops alongside our ‘Outer career’ – our work becomes fully humanised.

Humanising the Workplace’ – At Psychophonetics Institute we evolved a program for Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in the workplace called: ‘Humanising the Workplace’. It is adjustable to the different natures of different sectors of work and of organisation, but its basic principles and standards of sustainable human development are as universal and as personal as human beings are.

Work in all its forms presents the greatest opportunity for the personal, social, spiritual and creative development of workers. It is in the mutual interest of workers and of the goals of the work-place to actualise that potential.

Humanising the Workplace’ program and each of its 7 component serve simultaneously the interests of personal development, professional and workplace development and leadership skills.

The 7 Standards of Sustainable Human Development and of Deep Leadership

  • First Standard: Well Being
    Striving to take personal responsibility for one’s own physical, emotional and mental well being on the basis of one’s own intuition. Acknowledging the well being of others as equally important.
  • Second Standard: Empathy
    Striving to understand other people’s experience from their own point of view. Acknowledging one’s own experience as equally important.
  • Third Standard: Self Management
    Striving to acknowledge and to regard one’s inner life to be as real as one’s outer reality is, and to manage it practically. Acknowledging the inner life of others as equally important.
  • Fourth Standard: Boundaries – Identity & Diversity
    Striving to understand and to respect the diverse realities of others as being equally valid and important as one’s own reality. Finding the mutually respectful meeting of all the realities involved.
  • Fifth Standard: Decision & Action
    Striving for a responsible decision-making process and for acting on decisions.
  • Sixth Standard: Appreciation & Gratitude
    Striving to cultivate an atmosphere in which people feel acknowledged and appreciated on the basis of gratitude to the contributions of all involved.
  • Seventh Standard: Consistency
    Striving to cultivate consistency of all the above standards as a basis for reliability, fairness, ethics and safety.

The above 7 standards are equally relevant for personal conduct and for leadership; for personal and for professional life; for work and to family life; to social and to personal development. They enable work and home life to benefit each other while being protected from each other at the same time.
